Dental Implants

Missing teeth can be unsightly and unpleasant. Dental implants are a great solution for people with missing teeth. Not only do they offer a permanent solution, but they also don't require any alteration of surrounding teeth for bridges. Dental implants are a great long term investment for your smile.

Step 1: Inserting the implant

Getting a dental implant will be a process that takes a few months time. The first step to getting an implant is to install the implant itself into the jaw bone. The implant is a specially made dental screw that is typically made of titanium. Your dentist will insert the screw by making an small incision into the gum. If you need to get more than one implant, they can all be done at the same time. Once the screw is in place, the gums can then be sutured.

Step 2: Osseointegration

After the implant has been placed into the jaw bone, the jaw bone will need to heal. The bone will actually grow around the implant, making it a sturdy and permanent solution. This process, which is called osseointegration, can take up to six months. Because this is a long time without a tooth or implant, your dentist will fit you with a temporary crown so that you will be able to eat comfortably, speak normally, and not be embarrassed about your smile.

Step 3: Building your new tooth

Once the implant has fully healed and the bone has grown around it, your dentist will remove the temporary crown and place what is known as an abutment onto the screw. This will be the base of your new tooth. Your dentist will have to take an impression of the abutment in order to create the permanent dental crowns. In order to create the impression, you will be asked to bite into a clay-like mold. Because your new tooth will have to be perfectly matched in size, color, and shape to the surrounding teeth, the impression may need to be sent to an outside lab.

Step 4: Permanent restoration

The final step in getting a dental implant will be to permanently attach the restoration to the abutment. Once this happens, your restoration is complete! It may take a little bit of time for the restoration to feel normal, but soon enough you will barely even know it is there. Because the restoration will be professionally done by a top quality lab, your smile will look completely natural.
